Buyer Beware ~~ Foreign Yorkies

House Breaking The Yorkshire Terrier

Many people have the misinformation that it is very difficult to house break a Yorkshire Terrier. This is not always the case. As a breeder of Yorkies for the last 25 years I can tell you that the Yorkie is not any harder to house train as any other dog. My belief is that the breeder has a lot to do with the success of house training any dog. Many breeders believe that a pup should not be put outside before all the shots are completed. This is not a very good idea as if the puppy is sent to it’s new home and Not exposed to many new situations it will be fearful of all the noises that it will here at it’s new home. When a puppy is put out side for the first time, it is exposed to the wind in it’s face, birds sing, cars , and the noises in general of the outside world. There should be no danger of your puppy being exposed to any contagious disease if it is in your fenced yard and the breeder is there to supervise the pup.

Many people like to train their pup to use a piddle pad. In order for this to work well ,you must make sure you keep the pad in an enclosed area not to big so the puppy can only go on the pad. Many people like to litter train a pup or train it to ring a bell when it needs to go outside. Any of these practices are great, but first you need to start with the basics of house training. When people are at work all day it is more difficult to train the pup. Small dogs have small bladders and they need to be let out more often them larger dogs. Small dogs can not hold it very long as they don’t have good control until around 5 months old. This routine has worked well for me for the last 25 years. Most of the people I sell pups to have very little problem house training their pups.

I start taking the pups outside several times a day as soon as they are able to start to walk. I take the dame with them. We sit on the deck and let them explore the environment. We get into a routine, which goes like this. First thing in the morning ,I take the pups out of their pen and we go outside. As soon as they get outside they usually piddle, they get a lot of praise, a lot of times they will have a bowel movement as well. We go into the house and they pups are given time to run around the house and play. Next I feed them, after they eat I take them back outside and hope then they will have a bowel movement It is best to find yourself a chair and a cup of coffee and give them enough time to do their business. I then take them in the house and put them in their pen for a nap. As soon as I hear them awake ,I take them out again. You must be patient and consistent to be successful.

I do not let them run the house until they have gone potty and I have seen them go. It is best to take them out every 2 hours. In the winter time, if you can’t get them outside, place an exercise pen in the garage or an out of the way please and follow this Same procedure. It helps if everyone in the house takes a part in the house training. Praise works so much better then punishing a puppy for soiling in the house. When you punish the pup all it knows is you are upset, because of the change in your voice and body language it has no idea why you are angry. If you follow this procedure ,the pup will be trained in no time at all. If you work all day it will take longer. You should place the pup in a pen with papers at one end with a little food and a lot of water and play toys. Do not keep the puppy in a enclosed kennel cab. This is to small and there is no way to leave it water and if the pup should have to go it has no choice but to go in it’s bed and then step in it. This teaches the pup very unsanitary habits, and you will be upset everyday when the pup will need a bath. Myself I like to teach the pup to go outside. The other mistake owners make isn’t allowing enough time for the pup to go. We expect the pup to go on our time schedule and on demand. A lot of people think the pup will melt if it has to go out in the rain or cold. If it bothers you to put it out in bad weather get the pup a rain coat or jacket if you must but please put it out. They will learn to go in a hurry if they get wet or cold, don’t give in when you see that little face looking at you threw the window.Yorkies are very smart and if you don’t teach them wha you expect from the start they soon will be running you. Remember you are the Alpha dog.

Tips on Buying a Yorkie Show Pup

This is intended to give you some practical information on purchasing a show potential puppy. The first thing you might want to do is attend several dog shows and talk to the people showing the dogs. Please wait until after the dogs have been shown as there is much work to be done before ring time. The person showing the dog might be a handler and not the owner of the dog.

Purchase a Catalog so you will have the names of the owners. The internet is a good place to have a look at the types of dogs each breeder breeds. It is best to decide the type you like and work with a breeder who has that type. Working with a couple of breeders is the best way to start out looking for a pup . You may have to wait until the breeder gets to know you before they will be willing to sell you a show potential pup. You may ask if you can meet them at the shows so you can see what is involved to get the dog ready for the ring.

Most good breeders will not want to sell you a 12 week old puppy as a show potential. What is a show potential puppy? A show potential puppy is a pup that has all the qualities of a dog that if trained and groomed properly has the potential to earn points towards its Championship. No one can guarantee you that the pup will finish at such a young age. Most breeders will wait to lead break the pup to see how it moves and will train it to stand on the table for examination before they will sell it to you. Pups should be between the ages of 5-8 months old before being sold as a show potential.

You are probable wondering why the pup has to be this old. There are many things to consider.Yorkies developed from a little black pup with small tan points, and down ears at birth. It takes sometime to develop into the beautiful silky coated dog you see at the dog shows.

Things to look for when purchasing your pup. What is the weight and bone structure of the pup? A small compact pup might out weight the taller thinner pup. Stack the pup to check to see if the back is nice and straight. The tail set should come off of the back at a 45 degree angle. If the tail set is to low it will give the impression of a bad top line. Are the front legs nice and straight? The rear legs of the dog should have a moderate bend to the hocks, and be straight to the floor. Ears should be small and set well on top of the head. Some ears may be tall, but the most important thing is how they set on the head. Everyone loves the baby doll head, this is not correct. The head should be rather flat on top and the eyes should be a more almond shape not round. There should be a nice length of neck, with the shoulders sloping nicely into the back. The neck should not be a 90 degree angle to the back. Sometimes it may be hard to tell about the coat right away. Usually you can tell if it will be to light, as it will be very light at the roots and the skin maybe pink. If the coat is correct color the skin should be a nice gray color, if it is a dark blue chances are the coat may be to dark. When moving the pup it should move in a nice straight line. These are just a few of the more important things you need to know when looking for a show puppy. You must trust the person you are working with and let them guide you to make the best choice .The pup you pick may not be the one with the cute face, or may not be the tiny one you want, but if you spend time and effort learning you will be able to recognize the best pups in the litter. You should study the standard and ask questions if you don’t understand exact ally what it is saying. I hope this will help you as you are looking for that special show puppy.
