Information on buying a Yorkshire Terrier Puppy

I received many calls asking for information on buying a Yorkie pup. This is intended to give buyers some practical information and to save you some time while searching for a pup.

There are so many websites to look at that the information becomes very confusing. First thing to consider is do your want to buy from a breeder who shows their dogs or do you want to buy from a person who breeds dogs for income and profit. There is a difference in quality of the dogs. The price can actually be the same. Over the years the Yorkshire Terrier has become the number one Toy Dog in the world. It is the number two breed in all of the AKC breeds. When a breed becomes so popular many people start to breed to make money. The price of the dogs has risen because of this.

Some questions you should ask the breeder is as follows. Is there a health guarantee for the pup? How long is the guarantee, and what does it cover, how many and what type of shots has the pup had, has it been wormed? What age does the breeder let the pup go to its new home and how will it be transported.

Here is some practical guide lines you many chose to follow. Yorkie pups should not be sold before 12 weeks of age. 12 weeks has been set as a appropriate age by the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America. There is a reason for this. Toy dogs need to stay with their breeder longer then larger size dogs. This will a sure that the pup has been weaned properly and will not be in danger of becoming hypoglycemic after going to its new home. 8 week old pups have not had their shots yet and the breeder needs to be sure there is no problems after giving the second shot, this is the time of an allergic reaction after the second shot.

To determine the adult size you can about double the weight at 12 weeks old. You also need to feel the bone structure. If a puppy is heavy boned and over three pounds at 12 weeks chances are they may go over size. The Yorkie standard is 3 to 7 pounds. There is a big difference in a 3 pound or a 7 pound dog. You need to be sure you are getting what size you are looking for. Many breeders will sell a pup at 8 weeks and tell the buyer they will be small and the pup will be oversized as an adult. Best bet is 2 1/2 to 3 pound at 12 weeks. There can be variables to this.

Shipping is another consideration. Myself I do not ship pups on planes unaccompanied. There are too many problems with delays and plane changes to ship small pups. I have two differently ways to ship my pups. They are hand carried by a live person to your airport or directly to your home.

If you are calling a show breeder expect to pay more than 300 dollars for a pup. I get may calls from people looking for a cheap pup. It's best not to waste your or the breeders time when you have seen the quality of the breeders dogs and have seen all of the Champions on their web site. Breeders who show their dogs have many years of experience and will be available to you when you need to ask a question. They usually will be willing to take the dog back if your if your life situation changes and you can no longer keep the dog. Many people who breed for profit are the same price of the show breeder and you should get a better quality dog rom the show breeder.

Breeders who show are breeding to the standard and are more likely to breed for bred type, health and temperament. Show breeders have spent many years and a lot of money to produce excellent quality dogs.

Ask many questions and talk to a lot of breeders before you make a decision. A dog is a life. Don't be in a hurry. Many people look at the price of the dog first and that is there only reason to purchase from a person they don't really feel good about. Save your money a little longer and buy from a responsible breeder. Most good breeders aren't willing to sell un spayed or neutered dogs. There is a difference in a breeder and a puppy producer.
